OLiV Chef prepares for Skills Ontario Culinary Competition
Niagara College student Hayley Dietz will compete against Ontario’s top young chefs
Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON (April 25, 2017) – A budding chef who fell in love with cooking through her part-time job at OLiV Tasting Room & Restaurant will put her skills to the test in a high-stakes provincial competition next week.
Hayley Dietz, a student in Niagara College’s Canadian Food and Wine Institute and part-time Garde Manger at OLiV’s Niagara-on-the-Lake location, will compete against other post secondary students in the Skills Ontario Culinary Competition from May 1-3 at The Toronto Congress Centre.
More than 2,000 young people from across the province compete in more than 60 contests at Skills Ontario. More than 20,000 spectators are expected to take in the competitions over the course of three days.
“I’m really looking forward to putting everything I’ve learned on the table against other young people,” says Hailey. “It’s going to be a lot of fun to see what we’re able to cook up on tight deadlines in a competitive atmosphere.”
Hailey was studying psychology at a Toronto university when she landed a job in the kitchen at OLiV and discovered her passion for cooking. She reconsidered her education path and enrolled at Niagara College’s prestigious culinary program.
In addition to her culinary studies, she works at OLiV prepping and plating all cold dishes for the busy Niagara-on-the-Lake restaurant. She feels the hands-on experience and in-depth training she has received under Chef Robert Webster, has given her the confidence, general kitchen knowledge and practical skills she’ll need to face some of the province’s best young chefs at Skills Ontario.
“We’re extremely proud of Hailey and all of the work she’s put in to learn her craft,” says Richard Jorgensen, President and CEO of OLiV International Inc. “We’re going to be cheering her on at Skills Ontario and know she’s going to serve up some tough competition for the other students.”
